...Deceptiveappearance People, often are able to put illusions into someone’s head, which can manipulate how they think and this affects the person's judgment on what is reality. Illusions can be mistaken as being reality, very often there is a person making another person believe in the illusion and this creates a deceptiveappearance. Throughout the play, “Othello”, by William Shakespeare, the characters are seen to be blinded by love and manipulated by words. The play is also built on false friendship, which leads the characters to overlook the reality of their case. In the play, these illusions prevent the characters from seeing the reality of their situations and help bring them to disaster. In “Othello”, characters are blinded by love, which makes them discern things that are not there. This mostly revolves around Desdemona, daughter of Brabantio and wife of Othello. Iago is one of the main causes of the characters’ ignorance as well. Desdemona's love for Othello, ‘the Moor’ and a general in the service of Venice, is pure. Blinded by the love she has for Othello, Desdemona is truly convinced that Othello is not able to feel jealousy. Desdemona has lost the handkerchief, but does not worry, since she knows Othello will not be mad or jealous. Little does she know, the handkerchief represents her love and fidelity. “I had rather lose my purse full of crusadoes; and but my noble Moor is true of mind and made of no...
Appearances Can Be Deceiving Essay
According to Mind ToolsTM website, “It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed” (“Making”). This is a very disturbing thought. Imagine being judged after three seconds: a thousand 1, a thousand 2, a thousand 3. In that short amount of time, an opinion has already been formed. And a lot of times, the opinion that is formed is a lasting one, despite evidence contrary to the belief. Appearances are very important, even more so for leaders in our society. In “The Qualities of the Prince” Machiavelli explores what traits it takes for a leader to obtain and retain his position. One of the traits he explores is a leader’s appearance to his people. Therefore, physical appearance, intellectual appearance, and virtuous appearance are imperative if a leader wants to be effective.
A physically attractive leader will have more support from the people. This is due to the fact that humans are attracted to and seek out beauty. For this reason, the more attractive leader has an advantage. Since “ordinary people are always deceived by appearances (Machiavelli 49), it is more difficult for them to judge an attractive leader objectively. It’s no secret that the more attractive are treated better in almost every situation, including those that are in a position of power. One thing that can add to physical appearance, and in many instances substitute for a lack of attractiveness, is a sense of fashion. People as a whole always try to look better than everyone else. In most cultures, one’s dress is an indicator of one’s class. The clothes do “make the man.” And since people “in general judge more by their eyes (Machiavelli 49), they need to see their leader as fashionable. A leader must not only be stylish, but if possible, a trend setter. If this happens, the people will want to imitate him and how he dresses. This will help to make him a more popular leader. Leadership is power and the more areas one leads, the more power one possesses. Power is synonymous with strength and strength is a result of health and vitality. The appearance of a healthy leader represents a healthy nation. The people of the nation sense strength from their leader, which will make them more likely to respect him. This will instill pride in the people; pride in their country and pride in their leader. Being of sound health is important, but being of sound mind is even more important.
People must see their leader as intelligent and knowledgeable in a wide range of areas. Leaders must educate themselves and have a clear understanding of the issues. This is imperative because an educated leader will make better decisions. With better decisions, come better results. A leader must appear to be more knowledgeable than those...
