10 Helpful Tips For Writing A Definition Essay On Success

As always it easy important to understand the definition of the type of essay you have to write. And the definition of a definition essay is that you are to describe a word or term. It might be that you have a definite or concrete definition of the term such as a car or a particular book. Or it might be that you have an abstract term to define such as the case with this essay. So to start with, giving a precise definition is vital. Here are 10 tips to ensure that you write an excellent definition essay.

  1. From the beginning you need to explain the term itself that is to be defined.
  2. Whatever words you choose to use in defining success, you need to be precise and give accurate information.
  3. Success can be a subjective word and therefore it is important that you are precise in your language ensuring that your definition is clear to your reader.
  4. Telling stories in order to reinforce your point is a sensible approach to take.
  5. Take the time before you write the essay to write, in your own words, as full a definition as possible of the word success. Obviously if you don't have a firm understanding or definition of the word, your essay will equally be confusing.
  6. What type of success are you talking about? This again will help you achieve success if you are specific in your area of definition. For example, are you talking about success in business, in sport or in academia? Or in some other field or endeavour?
  7. The structure of your essay will follow the standard procedure of an introduction, possibly two fact paragraphs and a conclusion. There will be a thesis statement in your introduction and this is where you must nail your definition of the word success.
  8. Do not try and give a definition of success in too broad a field. You are not writing a thesis but an essay and by narrowing your field of definition, you give yourself a better chance of achieving a higher score by writing on a specific aspect of success.
  9. Choose only one main point in your definition of success in each of your fact paragraphs. Do not introduce any new material in your conclusion.
  10. You can gain ideas by reading other definition essays which are written on the topic of success.

Success

What is success? Is it the process of doing a task and receiving a positive result acceptable amongst the community, or is it simply achieving ones own personal goals? Success to me can mean many things. Although I am successful in school, that does not necessarily mean I will lead a successful life.

According to The American Heritage Dictionary success is, "the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted." Even over the course of history, the meaning of the word has not really changed. In the Webster's Dictionary from 1828, success was stated as, "the favorable or prosperous termination of anything attempted; a termination which answers the purpose intended; properly in a good sense, but often in a bad…show more content…

"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once and a while; you don't do things right once and a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit, and unfortunately so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that is first. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowel game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It has always been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win (Lombardi)."

I however disagree with this opinion. We are successful everyday by accomplishing even small tasks that are required to get by in life. To most of us, tying a shoe is a practice that has become very routine, but to some this can be a huge endeavor. We as Americans take literacy for granted. According to a commentary by Regina Lee Wood, director of research for the National Right to Read Foundation, the United States has a work force literacy rate of 76% (OCPA). For a person to be able to read, that is a success in it's own. "Success is relative: It is what we can make of the mess we have made of things (Elliot). Success has many different levels. In order to succeed, one must try; in order to try, one must believe in themselves. If we believe in ourselves, then we have already succeeded.
